Rattan, Rai and Kubler Take Charge At British Youth Championships!!

Newham Swords Fencing Club took a total of 12 fencers to the British Youth Championship Finals, held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield last weekend, and returned with a record breaking three trophies and two bronze medals!

In the Boys U12 Event, Pearce Clarke put in a personal best performance by gaining bronze whilst Nathan Dickison made the top 20. In the Girls U12 Event, Alice Campbell (the youngest competitor in the competition at 9 years of age) made the top 30 whilst team-mate Rachel Shaw gained 9th place.

In the Boys U14 Age-Group, England International Rajan Rai went through the day undefeated and eventually took gold, whilst team-mates Alan Lozovik and Kamal Minott came 18th and 20th respectively. In the Girls U14 Event, Ruhi Singha made the top 50 in her first appearance at these Championships.

In the Girls U16 Event, GB International Ife Kubler defeated the GB No.1 to take her first British Youth Championship title, despite sustaining a knee injury in the semi-finals. In the Boys U16 Event, fellow GB International, Alex Savin, gained bronze after losing to the eventual winner. This result follows Savin’s win at the Essex Senior Championships, held last weekend.

In the Boys U18 Age Group, GB International Amol Rattan rounded off an outstanding cadet season by taking Newham Sword’s third trophy. This is Rattan’s second major trophy of the year following his GB U17 Title which he won in November last year.

“I am so proud of what the fencers achieved at the weekend, particularly when taking into account that Newham Swords was one of only three clubs in the country to gain three trophies at different age-groups”, said Club Manager, Linda Strachan. “This is proof of what hard work, determination and great team spirit can do”, added Swords Coach, Pierre Harper.

International Honours Yet Again!!

Newham Swords Fencing Club has had its greatest season ever, in terms of international success. following the England selection of Rajan Rai (aged 13) for the England U15 Team in February, the GB selection of Ife Kubler (aged 14) and Alex Savin (aged 15) for the U17 European Championships, (taking place in Athens next month), and the selection of Amol Rattan and Ife Kubler for the U17 World Championships (which take place in Azberjan in April).

Rai gained his England colours after winning the 2009 U13 Age Group of the Leon Paul Junior Series, whilst Kubler, Rattan and Savin gained their GB selection after finishing third, third and fourth respectively in the GB U17 Rankings.

“This is a great achievement for the Club and for Newham”, said Head Club Coach and former Olympic fencer, Pierre Harper. “We are so proud of what the fencers have achieved in such a short space of time”, added Club Manager and fellow Olympian Linda Strachan.

Kubler, Savin and Rattan will be joined at the Cadet Europeans and Cadet Worlds by the GB No.2, Kristjan Archer, who is also coached by Pierre Harper.

British School Teams Championships

Lister School became the first non-public school to win gold at the British School Team Championships, in the under 13 Competition.  St. Winefride's Primary School came 12th and St. Antony's Primary School came 8th in the under 11 competition.

European Cadet Championships

Savin and Kubler Make It To GB Team!!

Newham Swords Fencing Club made history last weekend when two of it fencers, Alex Savin (aged 15), and Ife Kubler (aged 14), became the first fencers from Newham to be selected to represent GB at the forthcoming U17 European Championships, taking place in Athens between the 1st and 8th March. Savin and Kubler are now ranked 3rd and 4th respectively in the GB U17 Rankings, which has been achieved through success at home and international competitions this season. Their coaches, Linda Strachan and Pierre Harper, will also be travelling to Athens as the GB Team Manager and Head Coach.

“I am over the moon with their selection”, said Club Manager and former Olympic fencer, Linda Strachan. “To have two fencers from the same club represent GB at a major event is some achievement”.

Savin and Kubler are now concentrating on the remaining U17 internationals taking place in January and February, in an effort to qualify for the Cadet World Championships which take place in April.
